3th SS TOTENKOPF DIVISION

Ukrainian volunteers joined Totenkopf division came on several different occasions.
1. Galicias who were proclaimed to be "aryan" as result of racial commision held in 1941.
Some of them ended up in Totenkopf division.
2. Those Ukrainians who in 1942 were hoping to become part of Ukrainian army,
but instead were transfered among various Waffen SS division. One of such was
Obergrenadier E. Zahachevsky, who served ended up in 6th SS "Theodor Eicke"
regiment within Totenkopf division.
3. Ukrainian emigrees who lived in Belgium - some of them followed the
German recruitment drive in Flanders and also joined the division.
4. Ukrainian troops, mainly from 14th Grenadier Division were selected,
and joined the "Totenkopf" panzergrenadier regiment within the Totenkopf Division.
They joined this division around September 1944, hovewer very little is known
about the actual numbers and the further faith of Ukrainians in this division.
The highest decorated Ukrainian who served in Totenkopf division was
Volodymyr Olijnyk, who was awarded EK1, Infantry Attack badge in Silver
and Wound badge in Silver.
