UKRAINIAN SS YOUTH

Because of constant air raids by the Allies on cities, factories
and military objects, constant air defence systems had to be used.
Because anti-air artilleries were demanding a lot of people,
Sicherheitsamt (Defence council of Reich) realized that such
functions could be successfully performed by youth ages 15-18
and thus free more troops for the front. Soon with the continuation
of the war, youth from all over the europe was encouraged to join
the international SS Youth Luftwaffehelfers.
By 1944, such action occured in Ukraine, the Central Ukrainian
Commitee was intimidated to permit youth from Ukraine and General
Governement to volunteer for SS Youth. Ukrainian volunteers belonged
to the group South, while the Balts respectively to group North and
Belorussians to group Centre. Additional group Reich was from Ukrainians
from Strasshoff (Wienna) and Bransdorf in Silesia. The Commitee in charge
of Ukrainian Youth was stationed in Bratislava. In the training schools,
besides the regual material, religious education was give and local musical
groups were estabished and magazine "Doroha" (The Path) was published.
The number of Ukrainian volunteers was one of the largest in Europe:
Ukrainians: boys 8,800 girls 1,200
Latvians: ........ 5,000 ....... 2,000
Belorussian: ..... 3,000 ......... 200
Lithuanians: ..... 1,000 ......... 200
Estonians: ....... 1,000 ......... 100
Besides the Estern volunteers there was also a number of Arabic, Belgian,
Dutch, Greek, Italian, Hungarian, Tartar, Slovak, Flemish and French Volunteers.
