LEGION "NACHTIGALL"
-----------------------------------------------
Both Legion Nachtigall and Legion Rolland were the only Eastern Volunteers
to actually invaded the Soviet Union with the German Army from very beginning
of the campaign and become a part of a commando unit known as "Brandenburg 800".
As early as 1940, Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) began to
suspect that Germany would invade Soviet Union, and decided to create an
independent Ukrainian units within the German Army which would be able, along
with the Germans to infiltrate Ukraine. These units were codenamed D.U.N. which
stood for Druzhyny Ukrainskykh Natsionalistiw - Unites of Ukrainian Nationalists.
One of such was a Northern Unite of DUN, called Nachtigall.
The formation of the unit began in Krakow in March 1941 and further training continued
in Neuhammer near Shlezg. From Ukrainian side the commander was Roman Shukhevych and
from German Theodore Oberlander. The unit was outfitted in the Wehrmaht uniforms and
the only national insignia was a blue and yellow arm patch. With the outbrake of the
war, the Legions along with a Panzer-Jaeger Division and some Tank units went along
through Radomno-Lviw-Ternopil-Proskuriw-Vinnytsia path. After that campaign the
Legion was returned to Neuhammer for regrouping and extra training. After the training
the Legion was transported to Frankfurt am Oder where it joined Legion Rolland.
Soon afterthat the united Legion was transfered to Belarus where it engaged anty-partizan
warfare and continued to do so until 1942. In 1942, the Legion officers unsatisfied
withregards German policies withregard Ukraine, resigned from their posts and the Legion
was disbanned. Both officers and former soldiers - "Legionaries" as they were called,
latter joined 14th Grenadier Division SS Galicia where they received upper ranks.
