UKRAINIAN FREE COSSAKS
------------------------------------------------------

Very little know about this formation. Already prior its existance various cossack formations were included in Ukrainian police and Schuma battalions. Many Ukrainians also served in the Cossack Corps, expecial with the Kuban' cossacks, since the lands of Kuban had a dominant Ukrainian population. In 1942 General of Ukrainian Liberation Army, Omelianovych-Pavlenko officialy created all Ukrainian cossack formation which was called "Ukrainian Free Cosacks (Ukrainske Vilne Kozatstvo / Ukrainische Frei Kossaken), however already with the German invasion of Soviet Union, small groups of cossaks were beginning to form.

The institution of Ukrainian Free Cossaks traces itself to the formation of 1918 cossaks. With the eruption of German-Soviet hostilities, the HQ (located in Germany and under command of I. Holub) began to organise units if UVK in North-Western Ukraine and later on, all over Ukraine. Some units were raised as deep south as Kherson region. As the time progressed, units of UVK were incorporated into UVV (Ukrainian Liberation Army).

In Ukraine, UVK was most active around Ovruch, Korosten', Zviagel', Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia and Radomyshl' areas, usually performing anti-partizan activities. The HQ in Ukraine were located in Zviagel', in a large hotel, converted into bunker. Since most of Ukrainian Liberation Army was scattered all over Europe, the Ukrainian the cossack units ended up in France, but like most of Ukrainian Liberation Army were handed over to Stalin by the Allies after the end of the war.
